so, so thankful.

We’re still coming out of our food coma, and we were so insanely busy on Thanksgiving day, cooking dinner for two dear friends who trekked from Philadelphia and New York to our little home in New England, that we neglected to post on Facebook to all our friends and loved ones, thanking them for their support and readership over the last year. But seriously, everyone, we’re so grateful for all the feedback we’ve received and the growing readership we’ve gained. Who knew that people would want to read about our exploits in the kitchen?

Earlier this week, we received a Liebster award nomination from my friend and fellow blogger, Alison (note the excellent spelling of the name), whom I have known since we were 6. We were great childhood friends throughout elementary school and then lost touch when I moved to Seattle when I was 12. We kept in touch sporadically throughout high school, but through the magic of Facebook, we reconnected a couple of years ago. She has an amazing, gorgeous blog called paper{whites}, with tons of great recipes and event-planning tips. She is a crafty domestic goddess– if only my gatherings were as beautifully put together as hers.

The rules and origins of the Liebster award are nebulous– the more I looked around, the more complicated it got, so I’m sticking to Alison’s rules. She is, after all, the one who nominated us. We have to a) provide 11 random facts about ourselves, b) answer 11 questions posed to us by our nominator, c) ask 11 questions of our nominees, and d) nominate 3-5 blogs that we like that have a readership of under 200. For a) and b), you get a twofer since there are two of us!

11 random facts from Alison:

  • I have a fear of condiments. (get away, ketchup and mustard!)
  • I love rainy, gloomy weather.
  • I have four tattoos.
  • I hated the beach as a kid, but now I love it.
  • I love shopping for bikinis.
  • I dislike my middle name, but I like that it connects me to my two brothers (we have variations on the same Chinese name)
  • I have seen every episode of Three’s Company at least twice.
  • I started dance lessons when I was 4, and stopped when I was 16. (I have some stellar dance recital photos with me and Alison, but I think she would revoke her Liebster nomination). I started again a few years ago, only to stop again when I moved from Philadelphia, because I have yet to find a good dance studio here. My life has a certain emptiness without it.
  • I was born and raised on the West Coast, but find my personality and temperament more suited to the East Coast.
  • When I left college, I had intentions of going to get an MFA in photography. Art history was an unexpected detour.
  • I have stood in the front row or in a VIP section for 5 Madonna concerts, and I count myself very, very lucky to have had that privilege.

11 random facts from Jess:

  • I get up at 6 am most days to write for an hour. It’s my favorite time of the day.
  • I love coffee, coffee ice cream, and generally anything that is coffee flavored.
  • I got our cat, Ali, for Christmas when I was 12 years old. She is now 22 years old and still kicking.
  • I can tie a cherry stem with my tongue.
  • I went to Space Academy twice as a teenager. It was awesome.
  • I worked in theater, mostly as a techie, for two years after college. It didn’t turn out to be the right career path for me, but I miss it.
  • I’m afraid of bees
  • I love my middle name. It was my mother’s favorite aunt’s name, and I have a family crest and silver spoons with my middle name on them. I got the crest from my great uncle, who told my mother he would go to Ireland to get it if she had a boy. And then she made him get it anyway.
  • My grandfather’s family were bakers.
  • I have an obsession with a very particular type of yellow legal pad. I buy several at a time and carry one at all times for my research notes. I now have ten going back seven years.
  • I love food so much that I always feel a little sad when I finish meals. I feel happy going to bed because I know when I wake up I will eat breakfast.

(one) where do you blog from most often (as in: your kitchen? your bedroom? Coffee Bean?)?

J: Usually at home, late at night, after I’m too tired to do real work.

A: Late at night, often sitting on the couch, while an elderly cat is vying for my attention.

(two) what is your favorite thing to cook?

J: French toast. It’s indulgent, and means I’m spending a lazy morning at home with Alison.

A: Over the summer, a dear friend of mine, who is of Peruvian descent, taught me how to make arroz con pollo. It’s super easy, but it makes the entire apartment smell so good and I love eating it.

(three) who is your dream dinner guest?

J: Tina Fey & Amy Poehler

A: RuPaul

(four) how many siblings do you have and where do you fall in the birth order?

J: No siblings.

A: Two brothers, and I’m the baby. Translation: I’m spoiled.

(five) what is your all-time favorite book?

J: ONLY ONE??? I guess I will go with Little Women. While it is not the most beautifully written or complex book, it was my first “classic”, thus opening me up to a world of literature that I deeply value.

(six) have you ever wanted to live somewhere else, and if so, where?

J: I want to move back to Brooklyn so badly it hurts.

A: I would love to live in Norway again, or at least spend extended periods of time there.

(seven) what has been your greatest blogging inspiration?

J: I agree with Alison’s choice for food blogs. I also love Tom & Lorenzo, who are a totally different genre, but have such a clear point of view and funny yet gentle voice.

A: I would have to say that David Lebovitz’s blog has been a particular source of blogging inspiration, at least cooking/baking blog-wise.

(eight) in one word, how would you describe your personal style?

J: Layered.

A: black

(nine) what is your dream job?

J: President of Wellesley College

A: Curator of Painting and Sculpture at MoMA

(ten) if you were a dessert, what would you be?

J: A cobbler. Good, but messy.

A: a churro.

(eleven) when you have a free afternoon, how do you spend it?

J: Baking!

A: Sleeping! (I love naps.)

  1. this was so fun to read your answers!! i think i have a lot in common with jessica, too! which might explain why we were two peas in a pod when we were growing up. (oh, and thank you for all the very kind words. when i write, i do think of very specific people and wonder if it would be interesting to them, and you are always on that short list!)
